Great Lighting = Great Shade Matching
To get the most accurate foundation match, we suggest scanning your skin in natural, indirect daylight. This soft, even lighting helps our patented BoldHue technology capture your unique skin tone perfectly. Avoid: fluorescent lighting, cool or dim lighting, and direct overhead spotlights (they can cast shadows).
With the right lighting, you’ll be one step closer to your flawless, personalized match!
Activating Your Wand
- How do I Activate My Wand to Start a Scan? Point the glass lens side towards a light source. The lens light will illuminate, then you're ready to scan! Watch the tutorial video above for step-by-step instructions.

Battery Charge: Your wand may not work properly if the BoldHue device does not have sufficient battery life, as the device simultaneously charges the wand.

- Be sure to have the wand properly docked while charging as the device simultaneously charges the wand.
- Pointing the wand toward a light source and gently swirling it can also help it catch the light correctly to start the activation (the glass lens side of the wand will light up when ready to start your three scans).
Coverage & Skin Prep
BoldHue’s foundation is designed to provide light to medium coverage, but it’s buildable. If you need extra coverage in certain areas, you can apply additional layers for a more full-coverage effect while still keeping a natural finish.
How can my BoldHue match last all day?
You've got your perfect shade match–now lets make sure it stays flawless from morning to night. These simple steps can help you get the most out of your BoldHue foundation:
- Start with a Clean Canvas: Always begin with freshly cleansed skin. Removing oils, sweat, and residue helps your foundation apply evenly and last longer.
- Moisturize Well: Hydrated skin holds onto product better and gives your makeup a smooth, even finish. Apply your favorite moisturizer and allow it to fully absorb before moving on.
- Use a Primer: Primer creates a smooth base and helps your foundation grip the skin, reducing fading and creasing throughout the day. Choose one that works well with your skin type for best results.
- Layering: For more coverage, simply apply one layer of your BoldHue foundation, let it dry, and then build additional layers until you’ve reached your desired result.
- Finish with Setting Powder or Spray: Once your BoldHue foundation is applied, set it in place. A light setting powder or a mist of setting spray will help lock in your look and control shine or transfer.

Skin Conditions & Where to Scan?
Our formula is vegan, cruelty free, meets clean beauty standards, and is dermatologist-approved for all skin types.
Your scan is uniquely tailored to you, and the amount of foundation dispensed is based on your exact match and individual skin tone at the time of the scan.
You can also try scanning different areas of your face to dial in the exact color you’re looking for. For best results, avoid areas with wrinkles, freckles, vitiligo, melasma, redness, sun exposure, or other discoloration, as these can affect the scan and the final result.
Wrinkles
Our formula is designed to blend smoothly over fine lines and wrinkles without accentuating them. It has a light, breathable texture that doesn’t settle into lines, providing a flattering finish for mature skin.
Freckles
We recommend scanning areas with fewer freckles, like your forehead or chin, for the most accurate match. Our scanner lens is smaller than a pinky nail, so it’s easy to focus on the areas you want to match most closely. When scanning, our app will guide you through each step to ensure a precise match.
Vitiligo
With BoldHue, you are in control of your shade and we feel confident you will receive your match! We would recommend determining what shade of your skin you would most likely want to match and scan within those areas, simple! Of course, when you receive your BoldHue we are always here for you every step of the way and can help you when deciding where it's best to scan :)
Melasma & Redness
If you have melasma or redness and want to avoid those tones in your custom blend, you can absolutely scan areas like your neck to get a more neutral match. Our scanner lens is small (about the size of a pinky nail), so you have control over where you scan, ensuring your foundation is tailored to your preference. Our app will also guide you through the process step by step!
Oxidation
Oxidation is largely dependent on how you prep your skin, and it can vary from person to person. We always recommend starting with cleansed, well-moisturized skin to create a smooth base for the foundation. This will help ensure the most accurate and lasting color throughout the day.
